Celebrating achievement

The Trust is committed to recognising and celebrating the achievements of our staff.

Annual celebration day

Every year, the Trust holds a Celebration of Nursing and Midwifery day, to recognise the contributions of the 3,000 nurses and midwives employed at Guy’s and St Thomas’.

Irene Scott, Director of Nursing said, “The aim of the day is to recognise the enormous contribution that nurses and midwives make to the Trust and the health care agenda, and to recognise the successful completion of the adaptation programme for overseas nurses working in the Trust.”

Nurse of the Year

The first ever Guy’s and St Thomas’ Nurse/Midwife of the Year was announced in May 2003. Comfort Momoh, the UK’s only midwife specialising in female genital mutilation (also known as female circumcision) was the deserving winner.

Comfort provides support and counselling for women who have undergone female circumcision and also does reversal operations. Whilst it is illegal in the UK, female circumcision is still common in areas of Africa and the Middle East.

Colorectal specialist nurse Fiona Hibberts is the Guy’s and St Thomas’ Nurse of the Year 2004.

Fiona, who has worked at Guy’s and St Thomas’ for more than three years, has set up nurse-led clinics and also now practises independently as a nurse endoscopist – this means that she treats minor benign anal conditions independently where appropriate.

The four surgeons who nominated her said: “This service has had a direct impact on reducing waiting times for patients referred to the colorectal department, and has had a major effect on reducing pressure on consultant endoscopy lists.”
