The Directorate provides mainly outpatient and day care based services
for a wide range of specialties. The main areas are: Dermatology,
GU/HIV Medical Specialties and Twins
research unit.
The Directorate actively supports developing nursing at all levels
and nurse led activity with many examples of good practice already
in place. There are a large number of Specialist Nurses’ which
is representative of the specialist nature of the services provided.
Outpatient Services, Guy’s and St Thomas’
The nurses provide support to a wide range of clinics on both sites,
for example at Guy’s covering up to 60 clinics per week and
caring for over 1,000 patients. Clinics that a service is provided
for include: Gastroenterology, Surgical, Vascular, Colorectal, Thyroid/FNA
clinic, Toxicology, Oncology Breast/Lung, Medical, Care of Elderly/Stroke,
Chest/Asthma/T.B., Cardiac, Cardio thoracic, Neurology, Gynaecology,
Lipid, Hypertension, Renal, Ear, nose and throat/Head and Neck,
Allergy/immunotherapy. The departments also carry out, where possible:
Phlebotomy, Respiratory Functions, and E.C.Gs. Nurse led initiatives
are fully supported and encouraged.

Lupus Clinic, St Thomas’
The lupus clinic sees between 100-120 patients each week. The patients
seen have auto immune conditions such as SLE, Wegeners Granulatosis,
Chug Strauss, Vasculitis, Antiphospholipid syndrome and Scleroderma.
This is a national clinic. We also hold a renal clinic once a month
and weekly pregnancy clinics.
Diabetes and Endocrinology, St Thomas’ and Guy’s
There are outpatients and day case departments on both sites offering
multidisciplinary care for patients with diabetes, endocrine and
lipid disorders. Nurses contribute to a diverse range of services
including for example; day cases, nurse led clinics (For diabetes,
endocrinology and lipidology) inpatients, community, diabetes eye
complication screening.

Rheumatology, Guy’s and St Thomas’
We see a vast number of patients with varying muscular skeletal
problems from the most difficult inflammatory joint disease to simple
tenosynovitis. The clinic runs with five Specialist Consultants,
one Clinical Nurse Specialist and two clinic nurse assistants. There
are several sessions with nurse lead clinics, of which a few are
patient referring the others for treatment infusions.
