Set up to investigate the role of genetic and environmental factors
in the development of osteoporosis and osteoarthritis in postmenopausal
women.
It is clear that many common chronic diseases run in families,
but separating genetic factors from environmental factors shared
by members of the same family is difficult. This is complicated
by the involvement of many genes and by gene-environment interactions.
The classic twin method is an excellent way of attempting to untangle
the role of genes from environmental influences on individual characteristics
(the nature versus nurture debate).
