The Trust is working hard to improve the environment in which we
care for patients. One major project which demonstrates this commitment
to continuous improvement is the new Evelina Children’s Hospital.
The new Evelina Children’s Hospital is being built on a
landmark site at St Thomas’ Hospital which we will move into
in 2005. The decision to build a brand new children’s hospital
at St Thomas’ has given us an opportunity to design hospital
services around the needs of children and their families –
in partnership with them and our staff.
The Hospital will transform the experience of being in hospital
for children and their families – the underlying philosophy
is to create ‘a hospital that does not feel like a hospital’
providing a warm, welcoming environment as well as the best possible
clinical care.
Many of the children currently treated at Guy’s have been consulted
through storytellers and artists about the layout, design, colour
schemes and themes for the interior of the hospital. Trust staff
have also been fully involved to ensure the design meets the functional
needs of a modern children’s hospital.
In relation to the layout the in patient areas will be positioned
on the upper levels of the seven-storey building so children who
have to stay in hospital, rather than being cared for at home, enjoy
the best views. They will overlook the four-storey conservatory,
which will be the social heart of the new hospital – it will
include a gallery and performance space, a café and the hospital
school.
